Five Months Later

I slipped my hand into Alex’s and fell in step with him as we walked down the hallway.

“Hey, baby,” he smiled down at me and pulled us off to the side of the hallway, out of everyone else’s way. He brought his lips down to mine and kissed me hard.
“Only two more weeks until Spring Break,” I reminded him. 
“Yeah, I wanna talk to you about that later.”
“Okay…” he pressed his lips to mine once more, turned, and walked down the hallway to his next class.

I went into my AP Literature class and took my seat next to Zack. Why he was taking this class or how he even got into it always had me wondering.

“What’s going on over Spring Break?” I asked him.
“Oh… nothing,” he tried to hide his smirk by quickly looking down at the outlines we were supposed to be completing.

I rolled my eyes. Knowing I wouldn’t get anything more out of Zack, I pulled out my phone and held it secretively under my desk.

TO: Jack
MSG: what’s going on spring break?

I slipped it back into my bag and stared blankly down at my almost blank outline. I heard my phone vibrating and quickly held it under my desk again.

FROM: Jack
MSG: not telling ;)

TO: Jack
MSG: some best friend, Jackass.

He knew I was kidding, but it was the nickname I’d been calling him for a while now. I’d been using it more frequently since Alex and I had started going out two months ago.

Flashback

I was sitting on my bed texting John when I heard a knock on my bedroom door.

“Come in,” I called.

FROM: John
MSG: Guess what?

TO: John
MSG: what?

I looked up and saw Alex walk in.

“Hey,” I smiled at him and patted the spot next to me on my bed. He walked over very slowly, shuffling his feet. He sat down carefully and kept his eyes on the floor. I’d never seen him act like this before.

FROM: John
MSG: my band’s going on tour soon and… I really want you to come, Rachy

“Rachel, can I talk to you?” Alex asked. I set my phone next to me, instantly forgetting John. The tone in Alex’s voice had me worried.
“Of course. About what?”

He took a deep breath and then turned his body so that he could face me more easily.

“Over the past few months, we’ve gotten pretty close. I remember the first day we met you told me you had a boyfriend, and, well, you don’t still, do you?”
“No,” I don’t know what made me say it, but I did.
“That’s good,” he seemed to ease up a little bit, “because it would be pretty awkward for you to be my girlfriend if you already had a boyfriend.”
“Subtle,” I smiled.

End Flashback

I then remembered the hardest thing I’d ever had to do in my life, aside from telling John that I had to move across the country.

Flashback

I paced back and forth across my room, my eyes still glued to the phone, my worst enemy at the moment.

“Just do it,” Alex said softly.

I picked up the phone and then looked up at him.

“I kinda want this to be… private.”
“Of course, I’ll just… yeah,” Alex turned and left my room.

I dialed the numbers in the oh-so familiar pattern. It barely rang twice before he answered.

“Hey, baby.”
“John, I think we need to talk.”
“Oh, about what?” it was as though the happiness and life drained from his voice.
“Long distance relationships, they just… This isn’t working like we need it to, John.”

I felt silent tears start sliding down my face.

“Oh,” the one syllable made my tears fall harder as I felt all of John’s pain mix with mine.
“I love you,” I whispered, my voice breaking in all the right spots.
“You, too. Uh, bye, Rach.”

End Flashback

I jumped when the bell rang, bringing me back to reality. I walked with Zack out to the parking lot and we waited for the rest of the guys.

“Uh, I think we’ll drive alone today,” Alex said, wrapping his arm around my waist and leading me in the opposite direction.
“So, Spring Break,” I squealed.
“Not until we’re home,” Alex said, his smirk taking its usual place on his face.

The drive home seemed unbearably long. When we finally reached my house, I pulled him out of the car and up to my room, closing the door behind us.

“Now tell me,” I said stubbornly, sitting down on my bed and childishly crossing my arms across my chest.
“Okay, fine,” Alex sat down next to me. “Over Spring Break, our band’s going on tour with-“
“OhmyGod!” I squealed again, throwing my arms around his neck and hugging him tightly.
“Yeah,” he chuckled, rubbing my back.
“Wait, with who?” I asked curiously.
“This band called ‘The Maine’. Have you ever heard of them?”

Okay, so I finished this chapter last night.
And I've been in an insanely good mood all day and really wanted to post this today.
This was probably my favorite chapter I've ever written... that I can think of...
