I felt my throat go dry and gulped furiously.

“The Maine?” I asked, hoping I’d heard him wrong.
“Yeah,” he smiled as though he thought he’d given me a real treat.
“I, um, need to be alone right now,” I said, jumping up from my bed and running out of my house.

Alex’s P.O.V.

What the hell just happened here?

I slowly got up and walked back down the stairs. I looked through Rachel’s house, but when I didn’t find her, I got in my car and called Jack.

“Hey, bro,” he answered.
“Dude, have you seen Rachel?”
“Aren’t you at her house?”
“Yeah, but…”
“What’d you screw up this time?”
“I just told her the band we’d be touring with. Then she got up and ran… somewhere.”

I got off the phone with Jack and called Zack and Rian, neither of them seeing her, either. I drove around town searching for her. After an hour, I drove home, knowing she’d call someone when she was ready to talk.

Rachel’s P.O.V.

I jogged down the street to Paul’s friend’s house and rang the doorbell. Paul was standing at the door when his friend opened it, looking confused to see me there.

“Can I talk to you for a sec?” I asked, gesturing behind me to the front lawn.
“Yeah,” Paul pushed passed his friend and walked a few yards away with me. “What’s up?” concern clouded his eyes.
“Over Spring Break, Alex and John’s bands are touring together.”

Paul’s eyes widened dramatically, his jaw dropping.

“That’s about where I am, too,” I said, nodding.
“What are you gonna do?”
“Call John,” I said, turning and walking back home.

Just as I’d hoped, Alex had already left. I trudged up the stairs to my room and sat cross-legged on my bed. It’d been a good two months since I’d had any sort of contact with John. I dialed his number and slowly lifted the phone to my ear. He answered on the third ring.

“Rach?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s up?” he sounded worried.
“Are you, um, touring with All Time Low, by any chance?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”

I couldn’t breathe. I snapped my phone shut, dropping it as my hands flew to my throat. I gasped for air. Why? Why was this happening when everything started going to perfect?

Once I’d caught my breath, I curled up in a ball, wrapping my arms around my knees, waiting for somebody to come find me and make everything better.

I felt arms twist around me and pull me against them. Someone’s lips moved against my neck and I moaned quietly. Their fingers intertwined with mine as their lips moved up my jaw, heading towards my mouth. I turned my body into theirs and our lips met, moving furiously together. I opened my eyes slightly.

“John?”
“What?” Alex pulled away from me, sitting back a little, holding me away from him at arm’s length. “Who’s John?”
“Um, I don’t know…” I trailed off.

I’d never actually told Alex John’s name. Why would it ever matter? I didn’t think it would, but now I’m really glad I never mentioned his name. The tour would already be awkward enough, but maybe I could go through the whole ten days without them finding out that I had dated them both at one point.

In fact, I actually planned on breaking up with Alex very soon. Just temporarily, of course…

Okay, to be clear:

-she is only breaking up with Alex to make things less awkward on tour
-she plans on Alex not knowing John's her ex and John not knowing that she's dating Alex [although Alex will think they're broken up]

I hope that makes sense to everyone.
I just wasn't sure the last two paragraphs were like, completely understandable to anyone who can't read my mind.
So I just want to make sure you all aren't confused.
